FAQs for the McAfee Auto-Renewal Program

McAfee Technical Support team has provided answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Does all McAfee software have the Auto-Renewal feature?

Yes. All McAfee software purchased as a subscription includes the Auto-Renewal feature. This includes AntiVirus PlusInternet Security SuiteTotal ProtectionLiveSafe, and McAfee All Access.

McAfee Subscription Services are online managed products. The benefits include automatic updates and upgrades, providing you with any new releases of the products as soon as they become available. No matter how many improvements or additions are made to the services, you are guaranteed up-to-date protection for the full term of your subscription.

McAfee Subscription Services provide non-stop protection with a minimum of effort from you. McAfee takes care of all tasks for you, such as virus definition updates, Engine updates, installation of product patches, renewals, and product upgrades.

Why do you use Auto-Renewal?
We implemented the Auto-Renewal service after a majority of our customers told us that they prefer to have their license renewed automatically, rather than having to manually re-purchase the subscription each year.

Auto-Renewal can be turned off at any time.

When will my subscription be renewed?
Your subscription will be automatically renewed 30 days before its expiration date at the current renewal rate. Your subscription will be billed to the credit card on file for your account.

You will receive a confirmation of the transaction via email.

What is your Auto-Renewal Policy?
To help you stay protected, before the end of each subscription period the following will happen:

  • We will email you to let you know that Auto-Renewal will take place.
  • If you do not turn Auto-Renewal off, when the Auto-Renewal date arrives, we will auto-renew you for another year (until you cancel).
  • We will charge your payment method on file the renewal term subscription price in effect at the time of renewal. (Pricing is subject to change.)
  • We will also send you a receipt.

If you do not want to auto-renew, you can turn it off at any time (see below for steps, or watch the video above).

Can I turn Auto-Renew off or on?
Yes. You can turn on (enable) or turn off (disable) Auto-Renew at any time. Use the following steps:

  1. Go to home.mcafee.com.
  2. Click My Account.
  3. Click Sign in.
  4. Type:
    • The email address for your McAfee account.
    • The password for your McAfee account.
  5. Click Log in.
  6. Hover your mouse over My Account.
  7. Click Auto-Renewal Settings.
  8. Select your product.
  9. Select Turn Off, or Turn On, as you prefer.NOTE: If you select Turn On, you might be prompted to update your billing information.

Can I change the date when the renewal is processed?
Flexible Auto Renewal is available only for customers in North America. With Flexible Auto Renewal, you can choose any day between 30 days and 16 days prior to your subscription expiry date as a Renewal date.

If you are outside North America and you want the renewal to be processed earlier or later than 30 days prior to expiration, you can cancel the Auto-Renewal feature using the preceding steps, and renew manually at any time.

A full year will be added to your subscription, beginning on your current expiration date. You will not lose any time from your current subscription.

If you decide later that you would like to re-enroll in the Auto-Renewal program, you can do so online.

Will you remind me to renew if I cancel the Auto-Renewal option?

Yes. If you cancel your Auto-Renewal option, we will send you an email renewal notice before your expiration date. Instructions will be provided to renew your subscription online.

For help with the renewal process, call +1-888-295-0555 (available 24×7). You can also renew your subscription before the expiration date directly through the McAfee website at home.mcafee.com.

If you choose not to renew your subscription, simply allow the expiration date to pass, and uninstall any McAfee software you have installed.

NOTE: You will periodically be prompted to renew if you do not uninstall the product after expiration.

Why did my subscription expire even though Auto-Renewal is enabled?
If your credit card number has changed or expired since your last renewal, your subscription might expire even though it is set up for Auto-Renewal. It is important to keep your information up-to-date.

To update your credit card information:

  1. Go to home.mcafee.com.
  2. Click My Account.
  3. Click Sign in
  4. Type:
    • The email address for your McAfee account.
    • The password for your McAfee account.
  5. Click Log in.
  6. Hover your mouse over My Account.
  7. Click Edit Billing.
  8. Type the requested information.
  9. Click Save.

Auto-Renewal renewed a subscription for a computer that no longer exists; what do I do?
If you have stopped using a computer without canceling the subscription installed on that computer, and Auto-Renewal was enabled for that subscription, the system will automatically bill and renew that subscription.

Cancel Auto-Renewal following the steps for the question Can I enable or disable Auto-Renew?

To obtain a refund within 60 days of the unintended purchase, contact McAfee Activation Technical Support.

I extended my McAfee subscription with a McAfee eCard I got from a store, and now my Auto-Renewal is disabled. What happened?
This happens because the eCard is seen as a ‘one-time payment’. One-time payment methods cannot be used for Auto-Renewal. After the eCard is applied, Auto-Renewal is automatically turned off for your account.

Step 4: Run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool
If you have ever had a McAfee product installed on your computer, you should run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool to clean up any old files.
IMPORTANT:

  • Always download a new copy of MCPR before each use.
This ensures that you have the latest version and that newer McAfee products can be successfully recognized.
  • MCPR cleans up only the components needed for reinstallation. It is not designed to clean up 100% of components.
  • Completing this step requires a restart.

Before you start:

  1. When the process is complete, you see one of the following messages. Click the one that you see.

If you see this message, the MCPR tool has completed successfully.

  1. Restart your PC to complete the removal process.

IMPORTANT: When your PC restarts, it will not be protected from viruses and malware. Ensure that you reinstall your security software as soon as possible to remain protected. f you see this message, the cleanup did not go as planned:

  2. If you see Cleanup Unsuccessful again, ignore it.
  3. Restart your PC again.
  4. Attempt to reinstall your McAfee software.

If you are still unable to install contact McAfee Technical Support.

These optional steps might help to ensure a trouble-free installation.

  • Temporarily disable pop-up or ad blockers
If your browser has a pop-up blocker, temporarily disable it. This reduces the possibility of it interfering with your installation. Look in the Settings or Options menu of your browser to disable your pop-up blocker, and remember to enable it again when your installation is complete.
  • Run Windows Disk Defragmenter
Defragmenting your hard drives improves performance.
NOTE: If you have a Solid-State Disk (SSD) instead of a mechanical (spinning) hard drive, you do not need to defragment it. To run the defragmenter:

How to remove incompatible third-party applications

Security applications from companies other than McAfee might cause a problem with your McAfee software. For example, if you already have some other antivirus product installed, such as Symantec, or Kaspersky, your McAfee software might fail to install or run correctly.

This issue happens because security applications perform ‘low level’ activities while they protect your PC and scan for viruses. These activities might appear to be suspicious by other antivirus applications, which then try to block the activity from taking place.

If you have some other antivirus product installed on your PC, and your McAfee software fails to install or run correctly, follow the steps below:

  1. Check the lists of incompatible applications in the table below.
There are separate lists for Windows and Mac.

    1. If you do have any incompatible applications installed, go to step 2.
    2. If you do not have any of these applications installed, but you think a different application on your PC or Mac is causing a problem, contact Technical Support for assistance. If needed, we will update the PC or Mac list with your conflicting application.
  2. Remove any incompatible applications that are installed. See the instructions below.
  3. Restart your PC or Mac.
  4. Try to install or run your McAfee software again.

Most Windows or Mac applications can be removed in the standard way for that operating system. For example:

  • To remove a Windows app, you would normally use Add or Remove Programs.
  • To remove a macOS app, you would normally drag the app to the trash.

NOTE: Some applications require a slightly different method of removal. For those applications, you might need to contact the company who produces that app for guidance.

Remember, many software companies provide removal tools and instructions in their knowledge base to help you remove their products in the correct way. Some of these tools are linked in the tables below.

Standard removal methods

  • Windows
The standard Windows removal method is the best way to remove any third-party products:

    1. Click the link for your version of Windows. You will go to Microsoft.com:
    2. Follow Microsoft’s removal steps.
  • Mac OS
The standard Mac removal method works with all supported Mac OS versions.
NOTE: Some companies provide an uninstall script with their products, so check the product’s online removal information. If your software does not need a removal script, follow these steps:

    1. Click Go in the Apple menu bar.
    2. Click Applications.
    3. Find the app you want to remove, and drag its icon to the Trash.
    4. Type your password if prompted.
    5. Empty the trash to remove all files.

If you are not able to remove third-party application even after following all these steps you can contact our McAfee Support Team to help you with this regard.
